Full Strike Picket at the Base of Campus

February 10, 2020 @ 7:30 am - 5:30 pm

Grad students have voted to escalate to a full teaching strike, starting Feb 10. Join us on the picket line this week, at the base of campus (across from the Barn Theater) starting Monday, 7:30am – 5:30pm!

They’ll be breakfast, lunch, talks, workshops, performances, dancing, bike coop, childcare, arts and crafts, and a General Assembly for all grads at the end of day (4:30pm) to plan our next steps.

If you need childcare >
If you can provide childcare >

BYO: water, mug, tupperware, sunscreen, folding chair, blanket, portable charger, shirts/fabric for printing, musical instruments, bikes if they need maintenance, signs, banners

Needed: If you have a folding table, a portable screen with a stand, boombox or portable karaoke machine, and connections with local restaurants and grocery stores, fill out forms.gle/finJK151vk25v4WH8

If you want to get involved in planning and organizing, reach out to payusmoreucsc@gmail.com

Strike Recommendations:

  • Hold your section/office hours, or extended office hours on the picket line
  • Hold classes, office hours, meetings, etc, in alternative spaces (off campus, online, or in very visible spaces like Kerr Hall, McHenry Library)
  • Organize your lab or research team to commit to times on the picket lines
  • Call on faculty to honor the picket line. Instead of holding classes on campus, recommend that they relocate to the base of campus. This has been common practice during past AFSCME strikes and helps to increase undergraduate turnout/education on the picket line
  • Send an email to your students and encourage them to show up to the picket (see the “Template for Undergrads” attachment on How to Strike (Feb 4))
  • If you can’t picket, wear the COLA wildcat t-shirt, a UAW 2865 t-shirt, or red (for Ed). Wear COLA buttons to labs and seminars
