Day of Community Care
January 22, 2020 @ 1:00 am - 7:00 am
Dear comrades,
Tomorrow we will be hosting a day of community care for all graduate students (TAs, GSIs, GSRs, Master’s students, and those on fellowships) at McHenry café, 9am-3pm, as part of our strike for COLA. If you do not plan to go to the Regents Meeting (rsvp here), please join us! Can’t make it to the Regents or to the library for the whole day? Join us for activities at McHenry at 1pm. You can also share your stories of being sick in academia on social media by tagging @payusmoreucsc (on Instagram) and using #colasickout.
There will be coffee, snacks, and ways to connect with one another. It is so important during this turbulent time that we take care of ourselves and our fellow graduate students. We hope you will extend the invitation to undergraduates, faculty, and staff as a way to foster important conversations about how we can maintain momentum and show support amongst each other.
Graduate students work in conditions that can lead to or exacerbate illness. In a rental market where legitimate fears of homelessness can mean that it’s better to live in a mold infested house than complain, many of us are sick. In a workplace where we might work second or third jobs to make ends meet, leaving us with little time to care for our mental and physical health, many of us are sick. With the UC leaving us in such precarious conditions, it’s up to us to care for our community!
Our goal for this action is to show support and solidarity for one another, rest in one another’s company, and continue to work together to build a thriving and healthy campus community.
In solidarity forever and always,
Striking Graduate Students
