SUMMARY:Day of Community Care
DESCRIPTION:Dear comrades\, \nTomorrow we will be hosting a day of community care for all graduate students (TAs\, GSIs\, GSRs\, Master’s students\, and those on fellowships) at McHenry café\, 9am-3pm\, as part of our strike for COLA. If you do not plan to go to the Regents Meeting (rsvp here)\, please join us! Can’t make it to the Regents or to the library for the whole day? Join us for activities at McHenry at 1pm. You can also share your stories of being sick in academia on social media by tagging @payusmoreucsc (on Instagram) and using #colasickout. \nThere will be coffee\, snacks\, and ways to connect with one another. It is so important during this turbulent time that we take care of ourselves and our fellow graduate students. We hope you will extend the invitation to undergraduates\, faculty\, and staff as a way to foster important conversations about how we can maintain momentum and show support amongst each other. \nGraduate students work in conditions that can lead to or exacerbate illness. In a rental market where legitimate fears of homelessness can mean that it’s better to live in a mold infested house than complain\, many of us are sick. In a workplace where we might work second or third jobs to make ends meet\, leaving us with little time to care for our mental and physical health\, many of us are sick. With the UC leaving us in such precarious conditions\, it’s up to us to care for our community! \nOur goal for this action is to show support and solidarity for one another\, rest in one another’s company\, and continue to work together to build a thriving and healthy campus community. \nIn solidarity forever and always\, \nStriking Graduate Students \nGraduate Student Association \nUAW 2865\, Santa Cruz

SUMMARY:Rally With K7 Workers
DESCRIPTION:In comradely conversations between grad student TAs and K7 workers\, we’ve heard K7 stories uncannily similar to the stories in the COLA testimonial emails. As one K7 worker put it\, “we’re just trying to survive.” They’re fighting against unlivable wages\, against outsourcing\, and against gig economy labour practices. They’re fighting for campus safety\, reasonable workloads\, and increased support. \n  \nGrad student wildcat strikers have been looking to K7 for inspiration. The unanimity of their political will — all 49 members of their unit on strike — reminds us of the organizng work still to be done among our own rank and file. At the same time\, K7 workers have found themselves galvanized by our wildcat\, and have been moved by our decisiveness\, the creativity of our organizing tactics\, and the power of our numbers. \n  \nIt’s not possible to overemphasize the boldness of the K7 action. It is the first indefinite full labor strike in UCSC’s recent institutional memory. Other rank and file union members\, in AFSCME more broadly as well as in AFT\, have their eyes trained on the K7 action. If it’s true that we’re on the edge of a period of radical labor unionism on this campus\, then it’s no less true that the K7 strike is a decisive hinge. \n  \nThe relative smallness of the K7 unit (50 members) means that they need us to show up. Many of us have already seen the university’s characteristic response. The trucks of independent contractors keep rolling up Bay Drive; the university scrambles to replace withheld labour using the same practices that K7 decries in their strike. \n  \nHere’s what you can expect when you show up tomorrow at 10am. \n  \nIn solidarity with K7\, and in the spirit of calls for we as a community to feed each other\, some grad students have already committed to showing up to the picket with food. Participate in this mutual aid\, if you’re able. Food Not Bombs will likely be bringing food! \n  \nWe hope that tomorrow morning can be a time for connection and conversation between grad student wildcats and striking K7 workers. We hope that it will be a time to share tactical visions\, fears and anxieties\, hopes and inspirations. We hope that we can come together and ask how we can concretely support each other. Let’s show up for K7 at 10. If they plan another rally at noon\, let’s stay for that too. \n

SUMMARY:General Assembly for All Students

We hope that all graduate students will join us for any and all of these meetings to lay plans\, build our power\, and keep up the fight win a COLA. We can’t wait to reconvene with all of you wildcats. \nAll graduate students are invited to meet in the Media Theatre (click here for map) on Thursday\, January 9 at 7:15pm. Graduate students interested in participating but unable to attend in person can join the meeting via Zoom. A link will be provided in advance of the meeting. We hope that all graduate students will join us at this crucial time in our ongoing wildcat strike to discuss our current status\, decide on next steps\, and keep up the fight for a COLA! \nYou can watch the assembly via Zoom at this link: https://ucsc.zoom.us/j/224088796 \nGraduate students are volunteering child care during the General Assembly tomorrow night in the Graduate Student Commons from 6:30pm until the conclusion of the assembly. SUMMARY:Student-Worker-Power Rally
DESCRIPTION:The Administration refuses to meet with graduate students and student workers to negotiate a COLA. Instead of settling this matter\, they are attempting to intimidate graduate strikers with misconduct violations and nebulous threats of retaliation.  In the most recent emails sent to undergraduates by Academic Advisors and EVC Lori Kletzer\, it has become clear that the University’s strategy is to break the strike by confusing and misleading undergraduate students about potential impacts. \n  \nWe are gathering for a MASSIVE Student-Worker-Power rally at 12pm\, Thursday 9th January\, outside of Kerr Hall. We need everyone to SHOW UP! There\, we will tell administration: undergraduates will NOT be the wedge that breaks this strike. Undergraduates support this strike. We don’t ask TAs for our grades; rather\, we ask administration to pay their workers a living wage! \n  \nThis strike does not harm undergraduate students. This grading strike energizes us and reaffirms that we too can fight for–and win–the kind of university we want. It empowers us to make and advance our own demands: for free tuition\, liveable and affordable housing\, cops off campus\, resources for undocumented students\, and more! It empowers AFSCME workers who are still without a contract\, and who have undergraduate support! Together\, we have power! Students and workers RUN UC! \n
